What Love Means

God is awesome. We went to Sunday School at El Carizzo this morning with the children. We split up into four classes, three in the old Sunday School building and one in the courtyard. Our class studied and memorized Matthew 19:19. It is part of the conversation between the wealthy man and Jesus. Part of what Jesus told him was:

Mateo 19:19
"honra a tu padre y a tu madre" ,y "ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo".

For all the pure gringos, in English it is:

Matthew 19:19
'honor your father and mother', and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'"

The Sunday School teacher went around to each person in the room until everyone had memorized the verse. Then Claudia, the wife of Pastor Antonio, asked the children what "love" meant in this verse. The children told her it is like what their father and mother feel toward them and what they feel toward their brothers and sisters. She told us that is very good, but that the meaning of this love was even deeper than that. She said that the love that Jesus wants us all to feel for each other is a love that is so great that when we see someone who needs something, whether we know them or not, we are supposed to help them. If they are hungry, we need to give them something to eat. If they need clothes, we need to give them clothes. The children smiled and nodded their heads.

An eight foot by ten foot adobe room with a rusty tin roof and a dirt and rock floor filled to overflowing with 21 children and four adults wearing the only nice clothes they own. Yet when they see a need, they know to do what they can to fill it.

Jesus smiled this morning.
